The School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (SNAOE) of Dalian University of Technology (DUT) was founded as the Department of Naval Architecture Engineering (Department of Mechanical Engineering) in 1949. It is one of the earliest schools and departments of DUT. After more than 60 years of development, the school has become an important base for high-level talent cultivation, high-level scientific research, and high-level industry-university-research cooperation in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering in China.

Its undergraduate major of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is a national program of special majors of institutions of higher education. The discipline of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is a key construction discipline of the national "211 Project" and "985 Project". The school has the doctoral program of first-level national discipline of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and the second-level national key discipline of Design and Construction of Naval Architecture and Ocean Structure. It is approved to confer doctoral and master's degrees of the three second-level disciplines, Design and Construction of Naval Architecture and Ocean Structure, Underwater Acoustic Engineering and Marine Engineering. Besides, the school has a post-doctoral research station of naval architecture and ocean engineering. The Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Laboratory of SNAOE is a key laboratory of Liaoning higher education institutions, including Ship CAD Engineering Center, Ship Model Towing Tank, Shipbuilding Technology Lab, Ship Structural Vibration Lab, Acoustic Lab and Structural Environment Damage and Control Lab. Their experimental facilities have reached the advanced level in China.

It has advanced teaching and research infrastructure and highly competent and knowledgeable teaching faculty. The school has made outstanding achievements in talent cultivation and scientific research. A large number of graduates have taken important positions or become professional technicians in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering. As for scientific achievements, the school has won more than ten important awards including the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. SNAOE has built close ties with relevant domestic units in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering. Dalian Shipbuilding Industry co., Ltd and Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry co., Ltd have established state-recognized enterprise technology sub-centers in the school. Relying on the discipline of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, the school has gained approval to establish Dalian City Advanced Ship Engineering Technology Research Center, Liaoning Provincial Advanced Ship Engineering Technology Research Center and National Engineering Research Center for Shipbuilding successively. Their establishment has innovated the industry-university-research-application cooperation model, complemented advantages of universities and enterprises, and promoted the development of disciplines and enterprises.

SNAOE has established extensive cooperation with universities and research institutions abroad. Lloyd's Register, American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, ClassNK, etc. have all set up special scholarships in the school.
